Handwriting

Clear, fluent handwriting supports children’s confidence and overall presentation. Developing good letter formation, correct pencil grip and consistent sizing takes time and practice. Short, focused sessions at home can reinforce what is taught in school and help handwriting become automatic. This page offers simple guidance and activities to support neat, joined and legible writing.

Tripod Pencil Grip Song

Use the link to ‘Crocodile Snap’, a song that supports children’s fine motor skills in order to use the correct pencil grip. When holding pencils and pens, you can remind your child to use their ‘crocodile fingers.’ This reminds them to tuck away their little and ring finger and to use the other fingers to snap their pencil: https://youtu.be/1j0rPflY8-k?si=iXbwo5KRuuj2njEb

Letter-join Login Details:

Use the link below to access ‘Letter-join’ – a programme we use at school to help support children with their cursive handwriting. Once you have logged in, children can practise handwriting patterns, letter formation and joins.

Here are some more videos to support children’s handwriting. See the last video on how to use the correct pencil grip for children who are left-handed.
