Working together, achieving more

Maths

KS2

In Key Stage 2, children deepen their understanding of number, calculation, fractions, measures and problem solving. As maths becomes more complex, regular practice and positive encouragement at home are key. Supporting fluency with times tables, talking through methods and encouraging reasoning all help build confidence. Below you’ll find practical ways to reinforce learning and develop strong mathematical understanding. At the bottom of this page you will find links to websites and apps to support your child’s mathematical understanding.

Fluency & Recall

· Regular practice of times tables (little and often) – use TT Rockstars to support your child with this

· Use songs, chants, apps or flashcards

· Quick-fire mental maths questions (e.g. “What’s 6 × 4?”)

Multiplication & Division

· Practise related facts (if 6 × 4 = 24, then 24 ÷ 6 = 4)

· Use arrays, drawings or groups of objects

· Ask children to explain their method

Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

· Share food into fractions (pizza, cake, chocolate) e.g. “Cut this pizza into quarters, how many pieces are there?”

· Talk about money (change, totals, discounts) e.g. Let your child handle money and work out how much things cost or how much change they will get, work out the best special offer when out shopping

· Compare fractions and decimals using number lines e.g. “What is more ¾ or 2/3?”

Time

· Look at clocks and tell the time – digital and analogue

· Talk about timings on TV guides or when you are planning a journey. E.g. “It takes 20 minutes to get to school. What time will we arrive if we leave at 8.00am?”, “We arrived at 10.25am, it took us 45 minutes to get here. What time did we leave?”

Problem Solving

· Ask open questions: “How do you know?”, “Is there another way?”

· Encourage children to estimate before calculating

Reasoning Skills

· Ask children to justify answers

· Discuss mistakes and why they happened

· Compare two different methods

Games

· Times table bingo

· Card games: Multiplication War, Make 24

· Online maths games linked to school learning (see links below)

· Sudoku and logic puzzles

Everyday Maths Ideas (All Ages)

· Cooking and baking (weight, measurements, time)

· Shopping and budgeting (addition, subtraction, percentages, fractions, money)

· Telling the time

· Measuring for DIY or crafts

· Reading timetables

· Keeping score in games or sports
